* Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park of Canada protects, for all time, a portion of the Columbia Mountains Natural Region, in the interior wet belt of British Columbia. The steep, rugged mountains, warm, moist climate and wide variety of plant and animal life are typical of this natural region. The park protects unique stands of old-growth cedar and hemlock and critical habitat for threatened and endangered wildlife species such as the mountain caribou, mountain goat and grizzly bear. The Rogers Pass National Historic Site is located in Glacier National Park. Rogers Pass was so designated for its importance in the construction and development of the country's first major national transportation route. - www.pc.gc.ca

* Mount Revelstoke National Park

Mount Revelstoke National Park is a place of contrasts. Take a drive along the summit parkway through a variety of geographical zones. From dense old-growth rainforest of giant cedar and pine, travel up through subalpine forest, and finally alpine meadows and tundra. Marvel at the spectacular view of the ice-clad peaks of the Monashee Mountains and, to the east, the Selkirk Mountains. The Giant Cedars hiking trail takes you through a stand of ancient Western Red Cedars, and the Skunk Cabbage trail introduces you to jungle-like wetland, a birder's paradise. - www.pc.gc.ca

. 1번 고속도로를 타고 골든에서 서쪽으로 가면 그래시어 국립공원과 마운트 레벌스토크 국립공원이 나온다. 하루에 두곳을 모두 보기에는 약간 무리지만 시도해 본다. 산악 지역이라 날씨를 예측할 수 없지만 출발할 때는 날씨가 좋았다.

.공원 이름에서도 알수 있듯이 산들이 온통 만년설로 뒤덮여있다. 특히 겨울에는 눈이 많이 와서 산사태가 자주 일어나는 구간이다. 위험한 구간은 산사태로부터 고속도로를 보호하기 위해 터널을 만들어 놓았다.

.로저스 패스 Rogers pass 에 있는 안내소에 들렸다. 자료가 풍부해서 박물관 부럽지 않다. 이곳 역사 관련 영상물은 강력 추천.

.박재된 동물들이 많아서 아이들에게 좋은 학습의 공간이 되기도 한다.

.안내소 근처에서 쉽게 땅다람쥐들을 볼 수 있다. 사람을 전혀 무서워하지 않는다.

- Hemlock Grove Trail

.수많은 트레일 코스들이 있지만 시간관계상 우리는 짧은 코스로된 유명한 것들만 골라서 들렸다 가기로 했다. 우선 헴록 그로브 트레일 Hemlock Grove Trail 부터.

.트레일이 400 미터라 아주 짧다. 걷기 편하게 나무다리로 길을 만들어 놨고 알버타에서는 전혀 볼 수 없는 울창한 나무들과 식물들이 볼거리다.

.이 트레일도 1.2km로 짧고 나무다리로 트레일이 되어 있어 걷기 편하다. 습지로 이루어져있기 때문에 다양한 식물, 새, 곤충들을 볼 수 있다.

.알버타 바로 옆동네가 이렇게 다를줄은 몰랐다. 알버타가 추운곳임을 다시한번 더 느끼게해준다.

# Mount Revelstoke National Park

.그래시어 국립공원에서 나와 16km 만 더 가면 마운트 레벌스토크 국립공원이다. 우선 레벌스토크에 있는 안내소에서 주변 정보를 얻었다.

.우리가 이곳에 온 목적은 Enchanted Forest(http://www.enchantedforestbc.com) 때문이다. 캘거리에서 우연찮게 알게되었는데 아이들이 무척 좋아한다는 소문. 약 32km 정도 서쪽으로 더가면 된다.

.하지만 애린이는 왕자님과 공주님이 있을줄 알고 기대했는데 없어서 실망. 내 생각에 애린이는 디즈니랜드같은 곳인줄 알았나보다. 어른들만 신났다.

.다시 레벌스토크로 돌아와서 X-man 촬영지로 유명한 레벌스토크 댐 Revelstoke Dam (http://www.bchydro.com/community/recreation_areas/revelstoke_dam_visitor_centre.html) 으로 갔다. 1탄에 나온 댐이 이곳이라는데 확실한 정보는 아니다.

.안전상 내부 사진 촬영은 금지. 우리나라 댐들도 이렇게 견학시설이 잘되어 있으면 좋겠다.

- Meadows in the sky parkway

레 벌스토크에서 가장 유명한(?) 곳이다. 약 26km를 달려 레벌스토크산 Mount Revelstoke 정상부근까지 올라갈 수 있다. 하지만 이곳은 아직 여름이 오지 않았다는... 정상 주차장까지 약 1km를 남겨놓고 눈 때문에 도로가 막혔다. 나혼자 주차장까지 올라갔다 왔는데 주차장은 이미 온통 눈천지. 발목까지 푹푹 빠진다. 7월 말에 다시 와야 가능할 것 같다. 정상 주차장에서 약 20분을 걸어올라가면 Meadows in the sky까지 갈 수 있단다. 이것은 아쉽지만 다음 기회에...
